Have you mastered your tools?

A surgeon is a master at using a scalpel.

They not only have a basic understanding of the tool. They have spent thousands of hours perfecting their skills with the scalpel to ensure that every cut they make is calculated and accurate.

A wood carver is a master at using a chisel and sanding equipment. Anybody can use a chisel, but a real wood carver is a master at using his tools and therefore can make beautiful things out of wood that I cannot.

The point is

Whatever your field, you must become a master of your tools. A basic knowledge is not enough if you want to be really good at what you do.

That’s why it surprises me when I talk to people who have sheet metal fabrication shops and work with CAM software, and they tell me:

“We’ve been using TruTops Boost for a while, but we probably only use 20% of the features and we know we can get a lot more out of it.”

It’s kind of like the surgeon who says:

“I’ve been operating for a while, but I’m not very good with a scalpel and I know I can do better.”

PS: Tomorrow I will share the top 10 sheet metal CAM software systems. So keep an eye on your inbox 😉
