A and B class solutions

The sheet metal industry is very diverse. If we only look at two types of operations, there are already numerous sub-techniques under them. These require specialized knowledge and software.

For example.

Cutting techniques:

  • Laser cutting
  • Plasma Cutting
  • Autogenous cutting
  • Water Cutting
  • etc.

Pressing techniques:

  • Punching
  • Nibbling
  • Punching
  • Form Prints
  • Edging/Setting
  • etc.

Given the great diversity, each software maker must make the consideration: who is the target audience? Are they going for the broad market and bringing as many options as possible into one system? Or do they stick to a specialty?

Within CAM software, one nesting program is not the same as another. Nor is one side program the same as another.

This gives the difference between A- and B-class solutions.

The A solution is the best solution for a limited number of options, often even from only a few brands of machines.

The B solution is more versatile, but cannot offer the depth of the A solution.

Deciding when to choose an A or B solution and which system is best requires a strategy. The strategy must determine who the ideal target audience is and what kind of operations belong to it, now and in the future.
